I would like to update parents and training members on plans for the coming season.

The building work at the clubhouse has finished and 14 new lockers installed. The area behind the tuning benches in the clubhouse had a “void” from the floor below. The walls were knocked down and a floor inserted in the void to create the extra room where the lockers have been installed. We have also found room for extra tuning benches.

The club’s training equipment has been relocated to the top of Snow Gums chairlift. The mountain has allowed TSRC to build a storage facility under the Snow Gums chairlift tower – near Black Sally’s. This will greatly assist the club in the morning with the training equipment.

I would like to thank our club captain, BJ, for spending several weeks in Thredbo overseeing the project and also Tim Robertson, for his assistance.

I would like to make special acknowledgement of Oliver Thompson’s victory in the Super G at the Whistler Cup in April and top 5 placing in the GS. The field included the best male skiers aged 13 to 15 years from the top 20 skiing countries. This result is outstanding. Oliver is a local Jindabyne boy who has been training at TSRC since 2008 along with periods in Canada, racing and training.

2012 is the club’s 40th anniversary. The club will celebrate this during the TSRC Cup weekend on Saturday 21 July. A celebratory dinner has been organized at the Denman Restaurant in the middle of the village. Please see details below.

2012 Season

The club is prepared for the coming season. Training numbers have been capped at 85. Our Secretary/Treasurer is still receiving several calls a week from parents enquiring about joining this season.

Joe Draxl, our head coach, has arranged with KT, ten coaches (many of them TSRC returning coaches) for the coming season. As with past years, the number of coaches will reduce after the July holidays.

Joe is currently seeking expressions of interest from parents/racers regarding additional training outside the TSRC programme (which is July holidays plus weekends plus periods before major races).

If you require additional training please contact Joe on his email – mojoeis@gmail.com

The major TSRC Dates that you should note are:

  • Long Weekend (9-11 June) – depending on conditions there will either be dry land training or free skiing with the Head Coach
  • First Training Date – Saturday 23rd June – starting 8am
  • 2011 TSRC Prize Giving – Saturday 7th July
  • TSRC Parents’ Cocktail Function – Sunday 8th July
  • TSRC 40th Anniversary Celebrations – Saturday 21st July
  • TSRC Cup – Saturday 21th & Sunday 22nd July
  • Australian FIS National Championships – Monday 6th to Friday 10th August
  • Australian Children Championships – Saturday 1st to Monday 3rd September

Dry Land Training and Fitness Testing.

Joe Draxl, has asked me to let you know how important it is that athletes arrive for the season fit to race. Joe and our coaches are prepared to do their utmost to get the best out of your child – are you? If you want your young athlete to achieve their potential this year, put some work in with them – starting today.

There is a month or so to go before the season starts and hard work now will deliver results in terms of both better fitness and ‘ready to train’ attitude.

Lastly there will be fitness testing – so the coaches will know who put the effort in.

If you need more information on getting fit to ski, see the TSRC website, get in touch with Joe Draxl on 0402 32 1557 or attend the NSW Alpine training sessions on Sundays in Sydney.

Timing Equipment

A sub committee has been looking into the best timing equipment to be used for training. After looking at a number of systems the club has decided to invest in the Freelap Timing System – information can be found on www.freelap.com.au

The club will invest in two identical systems – comprising a starting gate, intermediate scanning system and a finishing scan. Each training member (at their option) would be required to purchase a Freelap Alpine Stopwatch (which is in the form of a wrist watch).

Each training member who uses this system will get an intermediate and finishing time which is down loadable onto the club’s computer. The system can store up to 700 times. The data will enable coaches to compare athletes and plot progress.

The club has decided that it will purchase 70 Freelap Alpine Stopwatch – bulk order and sell each unit for approximately $175 (incl GST) – which is 30% below the advertised single unit price. The club will provide a buy back of $125 after the first year and $100 after year two, provided the watches come back undamaged , operational and in the original box.

The decision to buy a Freelap Alpine Stopwatch is optionalbut the club believes it will be very beneficial for the athlete and coach. These will be available on the first date of training to those who have purchased them prior to the start of the season. If you wish to purchase one please send the Treasurer payment of $175 per Freelap Alpine Stopwatch or add it to your fees if these have not yet been paid.

The watches will be distributed at the beginning of the holidays from Felicity in the clubhouse as soon as they are available.

Fees & Forms

Fees for the 2012 season must be paid by cheque or EFT to TSRC before 31 May 2012.

All Forms – membership, waiver, code of conduct and parent’s child protection forms must be signed by the various parties and returned to the Treasurer before 31 May, 2012.

If you have mislaid your Fee Invoice or any form please contact the Treasurer on rs61@bigpond.net.auimmediately.

The Club’s training membership for 2012 is full and now closed. As per our advertised policy, old members were given the option to confirm their intent to return and to pay their appropriate deposits earlier this year. Thereafter new membership applications were considered and positions offered to those where vacancies existed. We are looking forward to meeting our new members and welcoming back our returning families.

Uniforms

A reminder to everyone that the club requires all members must train in their TSRC training uniforms.

All Members Under 16 and younger are required to wear the Beyond X TSRC red and black Jacket and TSRC Pants.

FIS training members may wear the soft shell black FIS jacket and black pants. This jacket may be purchased from the club (available from the first weekend of training) and worn instead of the club jacket.

During training, Training Members may wear their race suits and short pants. However these should be in club colours, where possible.

New Jackets & Pants are obtainable from Australia’s Beyond X representative, Colin Hodkinson on (02) 9440 3688 or colin@beyondx.com.au.

The Club holds a number of new black soft shell jackets for FIS training members and is awaiting delivery of this year’s stock.

If you have any enquiries on uniforms please contact Felicity Bidencope on 0419 231 490 or fbidencope@bigpond.com. Felicity will be in Thredbo on the long weekend and also the beginning of the school holidays to help with any queries.

Job Roster

As part of our contract with KT (a very comprehensive document which the Club Directors enter with KT each year), TSRC is obligated to run or assist in the running of 11 race days at Thredbo, namely:

  • SCECGS Redlands Cup (10 July)
  • TSRC Cup (21-22 July)
  • Australian FIS National Champs (6-11 August)
  • Australian Children Champs (1-3 September)
  • Northern Interschools events (4th-7th July)
  • State Interschools events (23rd-26th August)

In order to run these events, the Club needs to provide significant people power. The Interschools and Redlands Cup events will require a small number of specialist positions (starters, chief marshals, timers) as Redlands and Interschools provide gate keepers, course workers and slippers. TSRC Cup and National FIS Champs requires approx 25-30 course workers( gate keepers and slippers each day in addition to the specialist positions) on the hill as well as set up crew on the day preceding the races on the hill and helpers in the clubhouse sorting bibs and packing volunteer backpacks.

A work schedule will be put in place by the Race Volunteer Co-Ordinator, Felicity Bidencope for various events and very soon there will be a “sign up” volunteer page on our website where you can volunteer.

If your child is competing in any “TSRC” run event, we expect parents to be volunteering on those days as well as at least one interschool event as a starter. If you are “new” don’t worry, we shall help.

TSRC Website

The TSRC website is www.thredboskiracing.comis fully functional. The website has been updated for the 2012 season.

The Notice Board is available for members to buy, sell and swap equipment.

Please ensure you have signed up (on the lower right hand side of the home page) to receive the newsletters and posts electronically. This is the way all communications will be conveyed this season.

SSA/FIS membership

It is time for all athletes who will compete in the Children’s series races or any FIS events to ensure their membership with SSA and FIS membership is paid. There is a financial incentive to do so prior to June 30. Athletes will not be able to compete in these events unless registered with SSA.

Parent Social Events

Gabi Robertson has kindly offered to organize the Parents Cocktail Function again this year, following last year’s very successful function. The Knickerbocker Restaurant & Bar (same venue as last year) has been booked for Sunday 8th July from 6.30pm.

The cost this year is $60 per person – first drink and wonderful finger food and atmosphere.

We are limited to 100 people so please email Gabi Robertson on anniversary@thredboskiracing.com to confirm your place. Please email Gabi early as numbers are limited and we had well in excess of 100 last year.

The TSRC 40th anniversary dinner will be held on Saturday 21st July at the Denman Restaurant. A committee has been formed to make this a memorable night. The club is contacting some of the people who have contributed to the club’s success over the last 40 years. The club is keen to have as many members attend to help celebrate this night. The approx. cost for the evening – wine and sit down two course meal will be $70 per person.

We are also contemplating running a “ novelty” race event on the Saturday afternoon after the TSRC cup for past members/parents – tba.

In order to confirm numbers can you please email Gabi Robertson on anniversary@thredboskiracing.com to confirm your place. We would like a general indication over the next week so can we please ask that you do this this week.

Video Filming of Training

This year we will need help with filming some of the training sessions for video analysis for the coaches and athletes to use.  We do not want to take the coaches’ focus away from coaching on the hill and therefore we seek parental help to shoot it.
We are investigating the possibility/practicality of also uploading this so it can be viewed by athletes and parents at home.
If you are prepared to give some time for both of these activities please contact Jamie Neill on neill@ausship.com.auor 0425 263 633.

Old photos/ Memorabilia/ Reminiscences

If anyone has photos/ memorabilia of TSRC that they could contribute to our archives could you please send it to archives@thredboskiracing.comso that we can include it in our club history.

We are also keen to contact “ old” training members so again would appreciate any details that can be forwarded to enable us to make contact with past members.

Office Equipment

Does anyone have a four drawer filing cabinet that they are finished with? If so please contact Felicity on fbidencope@bigpond.com
